May has finally arrived, and while the weather may not have caught up with the season in Northern Europe yet, we can be in no doubt that summer is on its way.
To me, summer equals summer holidays, and so it will soon be time for us to pack our suitcases and head off on that much wanted (and needed!) break somewhere warmer, less familiar and hopefully more luxurious than we are used to at home.
Cruise holidays remain popular and if you fancy sunning yourself aboard a luxury cruise ship this summer, now is the perfect time to start browsing the routes available so you can reserve your spot before the prices increase.
Much like flight tickets, the price of cruise tickets escalate as each cabin category sells out, so we believe it is well worth booking in advance - and that way you have something to look forward to!
Where to go is the only thing left to decide, so here are 10 cruise routes to tickle your taste buds this May Day...
Southern Europe - During the summer months of June, July and August, you can pretty much guarantee good weather in Southern Europe so it's a great time to sail the Mediterranean stopping off at Spain, Italy and Greece.
Caribbean - There are so many different cruise routes around the Caribbean, you could probably spend the whole summer trying them all out! Southern and Eastern routes are my particular favourites, but all the islands have something different to offer the traveller.
Alaska - I have yet to cruise Alaska but it is certainly on my "to do" list, and June, July and August are said to be the best months of the year to sail the icy waters. Who knows maybe 2012 will be the year...!
Mexico - If you are looking to book a cruise for later in the year, Mexico is a great choice. Sailings form Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego head down Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Acapulco.
Canada / New England - The summer months are a great time to head north and sail the magnificent waters of Canada and New England. It might not be a sunbathing cruise, but the photo opportunities are endless.
Northern Europe & Baltic's - It is way too cold to visit these regions any other time of the year - so why not head north and witness the beauty of Scandinavia, the Baltic region and Russia on a luxury cruise ship this summer!
Hawaii - Some cruise lines offer Hawaiian cruises right up until the end of June, and then return in October for the 'main' season. Beautiful islands, warm sunshine and great scenery - what more could anyone want!
South America - Come autumn, many cruise ships head down to South America and offer some amazing routes around this stunning continent. From Brazil and Argentina, to the Panama Canal - you can sail it all.
South Pacific - If you dream of visiting French Polynesia, the Fiji Islands, Australia and New Zealand, but cannot bear the thought of a 20 hour flight, you will be please to know that from September onwards you can sail the South Pacific aboard a magnificent cruise ship - a holiday of a life time!
The World - If you have the time and the money, the world really is your oyster and you can sail right around the globe in 2012! From 28-nights to 140+ nights - you decide!
I hope we have given you some inspiration, I know I am certainly ready to book my 2012 cruise to... hmm, where?
