Ponte Sisto, also known as pons Agrippae (bridge Agrippa), pons Aurelius (Aurelius bridge), pons Antonini (bridge Antonino) pons Valentinians (bridge Valentinian) Gianicolense bridge, is a bridge that connects Piazza S. Vincent Pallotti Trilussa Square in Rome, in the districts Trastevere and Regola. The bridge was built to allow the crossing of the Tiber by Pope Sixtus IV between 1473 and 1479, the site of an ancient Roman bridge. It connects the two banks of the river between Via del Pettinari Trilussa and square.
The first bridge was built by Agrippa, friend and son of the Emperor Augustus before his death in 12 BC, probably to link its properties on the opposite banks of the Tiber. The existence of this bridge is attested to by an inscription on a stone on the magistrates who took care of the river (curatores Tiberis) discovered in 1887, about work on the bridge at the time of Emperor Claudius. The bridge was initially identified with visible remains of piers in the river downstream from Ponte Sisto, which they probably belong to a fortification of the river late. A fragment of the Fasti of Ostia found in 1938 that speaks of restoration of the bridge Agrippa under Antoninus Pius, has allowed us to identify with the "bridge Aurelio" or "bridge of Antoninus. In 1875 it was suggested the demolition, but in 1877 the bridge was widened with sidewalks instead of cast iron roof resting on corbels with new railings.
