You will find that the cuisine is kept simple but delicious when you stay in Tuscany. Villas located throughout the region make the perfect base to discover the cuisine of this area of Italy for yourself, and it does not really matter where you stay because the food here is exceptional throughout the area.

Tuscan cuisine is known for being healthy, hearty and very, very tasty. It comprises [predominantly] of salads, pastas, herbs, pies, soups and grilled meat. If you like your food simple, honest and delicious, you are in for a treat in Tuscany. Villas to rent will often have their own, spectacularly appointed kitchens, so you can try your hand at recreating some of the dishes yourself.

Pasta
Pasta is famous throughout Italy, and you will find that it makes up a large part of the diet in Tuscany. Villas are located in many small towns and villages as well as the major cities and, wherever you stay, you will always be able to enjoy a delicious pasta dish without having to look too far.

Tortellini and ravioli are the most common types of pasta here, but you will find many others as well. They are often stuffed with a ricotta or pancetta filling, and coated with a simple and delicious tomato sauce.

Meat
Meat is commonly eaten throughout Italy, but here, keep a special eye out for chianina, which is the best breed of cattle and produces meat very tender and ideal for grilling.

Bistecca alla fiorentina is the best steak available and the most famous in the region. It is typically grilled over a fire and then simply garnished with olive oil and pepper. It is absolutely delicious and goes down very well with a red wine.

Seafood
When you stay in Tuscany, villas near to the coast will allow you to try some excellent seafood dishes. Even if you do not stay on the coast, you will never find a seafood restaurant too far away. Some of the most common fish eaten here include monkfish and scorpionfish, and these are often used in the most typical seafood dish, cacciucco. This is a tomato soup where lots of types of fish are all mixed in together; it's absolutely delicious so make sure you try it.

Truffles
Tuscany is blessed in that it is one of the only places in the world where truffles grow. They grow under the ground and are very rare - making them very expensive. Both black and white truffles are found here and if you arrive during the autumn, which is truffle season, you should definitely make it your goal to try some for yourself.

These are just some of the things that you should make sure you try when you stay in Tuscany. Villas are located across the region and wherever you stay you will find the area has its own unique cuisine. The guide above should provide you with a good general idea of what to expect - now it's up to you to discover your favourites!
