More and more people are coming to realise just how much Croatia has to offer as a tourist destination. If you decide to book a holiday to this country to explore its history and try your hand at activities including hiking and sailing, Croatia has many jewels to offer. One of the best of them all is Dubrovnik.

The walled city

Many cities around the world have remnants of ancient walls that once protected them. But in Dubrovnik their ancient walls are still practically intact. The Old Town is held inside a consistent stone wall that runs for some two kilometres. Incredibly the walls reach as high as 25 metres into the air in some places. When you have indulged in other activities such as sailing, Croatia's Dubrovnik offers you the opportunity to follow the length of these famous walls that date from the 14th century.

When you arrive in Sardinia, you might just hear an unfamiliar tune or two as you explore the area around your villa. In Sardinia, travellers will almost certainly notice many kinds of unique musical pieces and musical instruments that they may not be immediately familiar with. Sardinia is one of the most culturally distinct regions of Italy, and so too it is musically distinct. There is plenty to discover for those musically-inclined visitors. If you hear a few stray snatches of melody while exploring the towns of Sardinia, why not stop and listen for a little while? It could well be the soundtrack for a wonderful memory of your trip.

Venice Cavaliers: the gallants of the eighteenth century

VeniceVenice (Photo credit: BillT)

Author: Albapp

It seems hard to believe today that it was the excess of bachelors during the eighteenth century what gave birth to one of the most representative figures of the century of Lights in Italy, and specially in Venice. However, this was the real reason that lead to the existence of the cicisbeo, the gallant partner, not married to the noble lady who is often represented in important paintings of the period as a main character or as a secondary one.
Most of the time, the cicisbeo was one of the younger sons of a noble family, bound to celibacy or the seminar for not being first-born. The latter owning all the family's property, the choice of the younger ones was between a life in the Church or a life of relative luxury next to a lady. Many, as one can expect, chose the last one.

Portugal is very popular for their cuisine, which makes this country a very popular travel destination. In the 15th century, the Age of Discovery greatly impacted cooking in Portugal. Cinnamon and curry power were very popular ingredients brought to Portugal during this time.
Prior to the Age of Discovery, many other cultures were bringing various ingredients to Portugal. The Romans introduced wheat, onions, garlic, olives, and grapes to the country of Portugal. The Moors were the first to plant rice in Portugal. They also introduced figs, lemons, oranges, and almonds within the country as well.

8 Unusual Paris Walks

Basilique Saint-DenisImage by rogiro via Flickr

Author: Boyd Lemon

Paris, in my opinion, the most beautiful and exciting city in the world, like most great cities, is a walker's paradise. It is a city of neighborhoods, each one unique. I am going to take you on eight walks that I took in late 2010. You can take these walks any time of year (mine were in the winter), and no walk took longer than two hours, excluding dining time. So you can take these eight walks in three or four days, if that is all the time you have. Six of them are outside of the principal tourist areas of Paris, so you will mingle with real Parisians at work and play. Each walk is easily accessible from anywhere in Paris by the Metro (the Paris subway). All you need is a Metro ticket and a city map to follow along. I have named the walks after the neighborhoods.

The Brittany region is situated in the Northwest corner of France and contains 4 departments stretching from Ille et Vilaine in the east to Finistere in the west.
The region covers a massive area of 27,208km2 which is the equivalent of Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and Kent - almost the size of the South of England with a population half the size at only 3 million! Roses, Horses and Dracula on Europe Train Holidays

A famous tourist destination: the Danube BendImage via Wikipedia

By Anna Copeland

There is only one way to really experience Europe - train holidays! Cruises have been popular among holiday makers for many years, but they are limited to the countries, cities and towns that cling to the European coastline. With Europe train holidays however, you have access to those gems hidden inland and away from the well-trodden path of tourists searching only for the beach! The landlocked countries can provide some interesting and cultural experiences to those who like to learn something about the history of the region while they travel.
Here are some of the more unique sights you may encounter on your Europe train holidays.
Off the Beaten Track
Away from the touristy coastlines of Europe you can find a plethora of fascinating sights that are off the beaten track, and much more interesting. Europe train holidays can take in the delights of Romania, the Carpathian Mountains and SighiÅŸoara, - the reported birthplace of Dracula. Or you can find yourself in Warsaw wandering through the medieval fortress which was built in 1274 by the Teutonic Order.

Indeed, travelling by ferry can make for the perfect relaxing journey - and you can even sample some fine French food during your Dover to Calais crossing!
Of course, France's most famous romantic destination has to be Paris. Known the world over as a lovers' paradise, it draws scores of couples looking to spend some quality time together.
While there's much you and your partner can do in Paris, the Eiffel Tower has to be the ultimate place to start. This incredible architectural feat is particularly spectacular at night, but if you're keen to travel to the top doing so during the day offers fantastic views over the city.
Meanwhile, taking a scenic walk down the River Seine and enjoying delicate pastries and hot drinks together in pavement cafes is a quintessentially French way to spend a little time with each other.

By F. Iglesias

Italian culture is celebrated multiple times throughout the calendar year. These celebrations include holidays, festivals, and feasts, many of which are observed in the rest of the world, however some of which are unique to just Italy. Many of these holidays celebrate saints, such as San Giovanni Battista, which takes place on June 24th and celebrates the patron saint of Firenze. San Rosalia (patron saint of Palermo, celebrated July 15th), and San Petronio (patron saint of Blogona, celebrated October 4th) are examples of some holidays unique only to Italy. However San Gennaro, which celebrates the patron saint of Napoli on September 19th is widely celebrated throughout the world. Italy also celebrates Palm Sunday (Domenica delle Palme), Good Friday (Venerdi Santo), Easter, also called Pasqua, as well as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday (Martedi Grasso).
