The New Year is approaching and we will all be thinking of our 2012 holiday destinations. The New Year resolution traditions stretch all over the globe. Here are a few suggestions for travelers wanting to make a difference this coming year.

Travellers resolution 1 - Leave no trace

An important one for not only the countries we visit but also for nature and to respect the environment. It is important we leave nature as we find it. Take all litter with us and not to chuck it onto the ground in beach, mountain, forests and water areas. To be careful when in hot climates not to start fires, especially through the summer months.

Travellers resolution 2 - Reduce water consumption

Many of the countries we visit are warm climates that see little or no rain for months. It is important to remember that although we are on holiday the locals that live there need water supply all year round so if we are careful with the water we are helping the natives water supply. Try shorter showers and don't leave the tap running when brushing your teeth.

Travellers resolution 3 - Not to over pack

Many of us feel the need to pack our suitcases to the brim. Nothing is worse than having to lug around a heavy suitcase. Try packing sensibly and keep your luggage to a minimum. When traveling to hot countries there should be much less weight as you will only be needing your shorts, t-shirts and flip flops. Also try buy your shampoos, gels and liquids from local supermarkets once in your destination country.

Travellers resolution 4 - Take better photos

Whether wanting to capture nature, family or funny moments we have all been in that situation where the images turn out blurry and fuzzy. Time to get practice and get to know your camera, turn your flash off for night shots and do not rely on your zoom for close up shots. Get right up close to the object to get a much better photo.

Travellers resolution 5 - Learn the lingo

A very important resolution all of us should take upon. Learning the local language is just as important for yourself than that of the locals of the country you are visiting. Not only will they appreciate you giving it a go, you will no doubt make some new friends. Buy a phrase book and practice before you plan to go and at least learn the simple stuff like "please" and "thank you".

Travellers resolutions 6 - Try different foods

Every country has its own food culture and depending on where you plan to go depends on how exotic the menus will be. Use this as an opportunity to try and test some of the local produce. Eating outside of your usual tastes means you can be adventurous and push your limits. You never know, you might just like it!

Travellers resolution 7 - Reduce energy consumption

I am certain many of us are careful at home with how much electric we use. It should be no different when we are traveling. Remember to unplug appliances and use air-con sparingly. This not only applies to electric but also to transportation. Instead of hiring a car, try moving about on local bus and train transport. Walking to near by shops is much more eco friendly than driving there and it is also better for your health!

Travellers resolution 8 - Promoting local trade

Many of these countries we visit rely heavily on tourism. Instead of trying to find English shops and Irish bars try to integrate into the local society and buy from local markets. Try out the local bars and you will find there is a much nicer experience as you talk, eat and drink among the local folk. Be a fair trader!

Travellers resolution 9 - Educate yourself on rules and laws

It is hard to remember when in another country that the laws are not always the same as to those from your own. Some countries forbid you to smoke or walk around in your bikini. So please always check before traveling what you are and what you are not allowed to do in your destination country. It will save you getting into trouble even though you think you have not done anything wrong.

Travellers resolution 10 - Write about your adventures

Writing up a report or keeping a diary of your adventures is a way of documenting your travels and to look back on them whilst talking to your grand children in years to come. Even if nobody reads it your memories will be much fresher if you write them down. If you travel regularly try keeping a travel blog for your reports and upload your photos to one of the many photo hosting websites to keep your computer free of 1000s of photos.

Using this list you have no excuses when it comes to taking care and respecting both the holiday rentals you choose and the country that you are visiting. Enjoy your 2012 travels.
