8 Unusual Paris Walks

Basilique Saint-DenisImage by rogiro via Flickr

Author: Boyd Lemon

Paris, in my opinion, the most beautiful and exciting city in the world, like most great cities, is a walker's paradise. It is a city of neighborhoods, each one unique. I am going to take you on eight walks that I took in late 2010. You can take these walks any time of year (mine were in the winter), and no walk took longer than two hours, excluding dining time. So you can take these eight walks in three or four days, if that is all the time you have. Six of them are outside of the principal tourist areas of Paris, so you will mingle with real Parisians at work and play. Each walk is easily accessible from anywhere in Paris by the Metro (the Paris subway). All you need is a Metro ticket and a city map to follow along. I have named the walks after the neighborhoods.

Via Dolorosa - A Way of Grief

Paris - Sacre-CoeurImage via Wikipedia

By Shrihari Pataskar

If you're planning a trip to Paris just for sake of seeing Eiffel tower, then you are definitely wrong. Apart from Eiffel Tower there are much more famous places located in Paris such as the very famous and worth place to be watched is Sacre Coeur on Monometer. It is basically a church located at the top of the hill which touches the skyline on the horizon. The foundation of the Sacre Coeur was started with a stone in 1875 and rest of the stones was bought by the donation from various pilgrims. The specialty of this church is that it is too white in color and gives a different look to Paris. Sacre Coeur is the heart of the Paris, majority of the visitors visit every year. To reach at Sacre Coeur there are number of ways to the top of hill. It is as per the choice whether you want to walk or hire a cab. By walking, you have to walk up to the top of the hill if you have enough time and energy to climb. One can either take three different ways to reach:-

Is Spring The Best Season To Spend A Month Or More In Paris?

The Eiffel tower at sunrise, taken from the Pl...Image via Wikipedia

"April in Paris" is a ballad that probably inspired more spring vacations in the City of Light than any advertising campaign ever did, with its lyrical descriptions of "chestnuts in blossom" and "holiday tables under the trees." The fact is, April in Paris is generally chilly and rainy, and although the fabled chestnut trees are indeed blooming, along with lilacs and wisteria, one would probably rather avoid lunching under dripping trees.

Paris, France - Place Des Abbesses

Basilique du Sacré-Cœur in Paris (France)Image via Wikipedia

After the din of the neighbouring place du Tertre, the tranquil place des Abbesses is the ideal place to pause, enjoy a coffee and take in the absorbing atmosphere of the area. One of Montmartre's prettiest squares, it is just a short walk from the Sacre-Coeur and Pigalle, and is a favoured Sunday morning haunt of local residents as well as visitors.
Surrounding the square are some fine examples of extravagant art nouveau architecture, the most notable of which is the canopied metro entrance that leads to Paris' deepest station at 40m (31 feet). Designed by Hector Guimard, it features amber lanterns and green wrought-iron arches, and is one of the last remaining examples in the city. The Eglise St-Jean-de-Montmartre, which dates from 1904, is named after the abbey that once stood on the site. The decorative windows, which significantly brighten up its otherwise austere facade, date from the same period.
This is where caricaturists, portrait and landscape artists congregate each day to paint local scenes and willing passers-by. Visitors throng these "street studios" so that they can can take home a drawing or painting of themselves. The place du Tertre is a fascinating, though touristy, reminder of a time when Picasso or Renoir may have sat in this very square and painted.
From my personal experience, the surrounding square is an excellent location for a traveller to immerse him or herself in some of Paris best local art architecture. There are many great photo opportunities to be had, so make sure to bring a camera and save a couple hours for the Place des Abbesses.
