The New Stunning Destination to Travel to - Calabria in Southern Italy

If you're looking for a vacation or travel destination that will leave a lasting impression, it's time for you to visit the new stunning destination to see - Calabria, Southern Italy. This region might leave a lot of people dumbfounded. It's not exactly a household name in terms of popular travel destinations. But that's because Calabria hasn't been very accessible for a really long time. In fact, only some parts in the UK, Europe and the US have had a direct routes to the region's airports. It was only recently that the Italian government and the Calabria local authorities have made giant steps in upgrading its road infrastructures and airports.

At the toe of Italy's boot, right in the south of the country, can be found the wild and unspoilt region of Calabria. Most well-known for its seaside resorts - no part of the area is more than 50 km from the sea - Calabria's towns are modern creations that have been built for the tourists. However, if you wander off the tourist trail, there are many historic villages high in the mountains and the region is famous for its Greek and Roman heritage, with ruins in the countryside and artefacts in the museums.
History
Some of the best Greek and Roman ruins can be found in the towns of Cosanza and Reggio Calabria, such as baths, theatres and even bridges. Further afield, recent digs have uncovered evidence of ancient villages at Sibari, Crotone, Catanzaro, Locri, Vibo Valentia, and there is undoubtedly more to discover in this historic region of Italy. Many of the artefacts that have been found at these digs are now on display in one of Calabria's many archaeological museums, including the National Museum in Reggio Calabria. Contained here is one of the most important collections in all of Italy, including Byzantine art, relics of Bronze and Iron Age tombs and the world-famous Bronzes of Riace, two large bronze statues of warriors dating from the fifth century BC.

In 1945, at the end of II World War, Italian economy was very bad as there were no resources to modernize Railways Network. Fares were very low but service had also very poor quality too. Trains were always late as they stopped in all stations because they had to serve as many people as possible. Imagine: more than 20 hours were needed to go from Milan to Reggio Calabria (the main city of Calabria Region, down in the South of Italy) and it took 8 hours' time from Milan to Rome.

Calabria For Tourists - 5 Things You Must See and Do

If you are visiting Calabria here are five things you must see and do while touring the region.
1. Visit Grotto Del Romito. Situated in the province of Cosenza, Grotto del Romito is a large imposing cavern that offers you a stunning display of stalactites and stalagmites. It is also the resting place of some of Calabria's earlier residents, with the skeletons found at the grotto estimated to be well over 10,000 years old. There is even evidence as to how they might have died, with one skeleton supposedly having met his death via a stone arrow. Even older than these skeletons, is the engraving of a bull, on the walls of the cave, which is thought to be well over 12,000 years old. The engraving is referred to as, 'Bos Promigenius,' and is a hugely popular tourist attraction in Cosenza.
2. Come face to face with a Grecian warrior or two, even if they are all bronze and no flesh and blood. Known as the Bronzi di Riace, or the Riace Bronzes, in translation, these two life sized bronze nudes which are currently housed at the National Museum in Reggio Calabria, are thought to have been lost at sea, for over two thousand years. The statues are truly a sight to behold with their eyes being inset with bone and glass and their teeth made of pure silver.
