Ah, La Bella Italia! Whenever one thinks of a holiday in Italy, it's hard not to smile. The food, the people, the towns, the history and just that Italian style and charm - they all bring an instinctive warmth even if you've never even visited the country! Walking in Italy is a way to really experience that warmth first-hand.

Italy - Worlds within worlds

What can be said about Italy? Home of the Roman Empire; the Renaissance; great science; art; literature; and today, a byword for high fashion. Italian cuisine in all its glory rivals the best in the world, and the friendliness and hospitality of the Italian people is legendary.

After travel, our next greatest passion in life is enjoying good food, and so our recent trips to Italy left us with not only wonderful memories, new travel ideas, and great holiday snaps, but it also left us with a whole lot more than an inch to pinch!
A country passionate about everything from the way they speak to each other (hands and all!), the way they dress (don't forget the sunglasses!), and the way they cook, the Italians certainly know how to live life to its fullest, and their Mediterranean style of cooking tickles the taste buds in all the right places.
From teeny tiny espresso's and sweet treats for breakfast, to pizza lunches, and pasta and salad evening menus, they really know how to create a delicious meal from simple ingredients, and that's before you even get started on the gelato!

The Italian Food Culture

Pasta con funghi e piselliImage by davide.santoni via FlickrPastaImage by HatM via FlickrThe Italian food culture concerns not only what we see at Italian tables or in a rich Italian restaurant menu.
It is something much deeper in Italians’ DNA.
Italians have some beliefs that go beyond education or tradition.
Concerning pasta
An easy example could be the pasta shapes and their seasonings. Considering that among dry pasta (the ones you usually buy inside paper or plastic bags that last for long) the difference is only the shape of it, nothing else, the shape itself is something very important for Italians.
There’s a traditional pasta sauce recipe from Roma region called Pasta all’amatriciana (it’s a tasty sauce made with tomatoes and bacon). Usually it’s served using the bucatini pasta (kind of huge spaghetti with a hole in its middle).
An Italian woman was disgusted hearing her hairdress telling her colleague that preferred it with short pasta. She said: “Don’t ask me why. It is just as it is. Amatriciana must go with long pasta. How can one imagine cooking it with short pasta?” The same goes for pasta with oil and garlic (aglio e olio), you probably will never see it served using any other pasta that isn’t spaghetti.

And no matter if many Italian people prefer more exotic or faraway destinations, looking for something different; certainly you can find many interesting seaside resorts also in many other countries, but there are also many Italian people that recognize the huge heritage that they have at disposal and decide to spend their holidays on one of the many beaches of Italy. Moreover there are many foreigners who visit Italy and come from Russia, Germany and many other countries to relax under the Italian sun listening to the sound of the Mediterranean Sea, and who remind Italian people of the valuable asset that they have at their disposal and that many foreign people envy.

Italian culture is celebrated multiple times throughout the calendar year. These celebrations include holidays, festivals, and feasts, many of which are observed in the rest of the world, however some of which are unique to just Italy. Many of these holidays celebrate saints, such as San Giovanni Battista, which takes place on June 24th and celebrates the patron saint of Firenze. San Rosalia (patron saint of Palermo, celebrated July 15th), and San Petronio (patron saint of Blogona, celebrated October 4th) are examples of some holidays unique only to Italy. However San Gennaro, which celebrates the patron saint of Napoli on September 19th is widely celebrated throughout the world. Italy also celebrates Palm Sunday (Domenica delle Palme), Good Friday (Venerdi Santo), Easter, also called Pasqua, as well as Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday (Martedi Grasso).
