10 Of the Best Cruise Routes to Take in 2012

By Wendy Kaufmann

May has finally arrived, and while the weather may not have caught up with the season in Northern Europe yet, we can be in no doubt that summer is on its way.
To me, summer equals summer holidays, and so it will soon be time for us to pack our suitcases and head off on that much wanted (and needed!) break somewhere warmer, less familiar and hopefully more luxurious than we are used to at home.
Cruise holidays remain popular and if you fancy sunning yourself aboard a luxury cruise ship this summer, now is the perfect time to start browsing the routes available so you can reserve your spot before the prices increase.

The World's Ten Best Sights from Balloon Rides

Overlook over the Colorado River in the Grand ...Image via WikipediaIf only I lived in a balloon, I could see the whole world from the sky. These are the sights I would choose to see and the reasons why.

1.Grand Canyon, USA

Carved by the Colorado River in the state of Arizona, the Grand Canyon is 446km long, 29km wide, and in some parts 1.8km deep. The stone's burnt orange colour looks like terracotta and is absolutely magnificent.

2.Halong Bay, Vietnam

This "Bay of the Descending Dragon" consists of a dense group of 3000 colossal islands, each topped with thick, jungle vegetation, which rise dramatically from the ocean.

3.Ngorougoron Crater, Tanzania

Located at the eastern edge of the Serengeti, this crater lies within the Ngorongoro Conservation area, which covers more then 8000 square kilometres of immaculate African wilderness.

4.Machu Picchu, Peru

This "Old Mountain" is a pre-historic Inca site located 2,430 metres above sea level. It is believed to have been built as an estate for the 15th century Inca emperor Pachacuti. "The Lost City of the Incas" is perhaps the most familiar icon of the Inca world.

5.Chichen Itza, Mexico

This archaeological site was built by the Maya civilization in the Yucutan state of Mexico. The three best known complexes on the site are the Great Northern Platform, the Ossario Group and the Central Group.

6.Egyptian Pyramids, Egypt

These spectacular pyramids were built as tombs for the country's Pharaohs and their wives during the Old and Middle Kingdom periods. The most famous pyramids are located in Giza and on the outskirts of Cairo.

7.Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Built between 802 and 1220 AD in the Kmer civilization, Angkor Wat represents one of humankind's most astounding and enduring architectural achievements. The site was covered for centuries until French explorer Henri Monhot brought it to the world's attention in 1860.

8.Amazon Rainforest, Ecuador

This wet broadleaf forest covers most of the Amazon Basin of South America. The basin encompasses 7,000,000 square kilometres and is home to 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and 2,000 birds and mammals.

9.Iguasu Falls, Argentina and Brazil

A collection of 275 amazing waterfalls spanning 3 km along the border of Argentina and Brazil. Standing before this emotionally powerful and stunning force of nature is nothing short of humbling.

10.Stonehenge, England

One of the most famous archaeological sites in the world, these large, freestanding stones are surrounded by the most gorgeous earthworks. The Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments were erected around 2500 BC as burial grounds.

Ohhhh... If only I lived in a balloon....

Master the Tango While You Learn Spanish In Buenos Aires

Diagonal Norte StImage via Wikipedia

Many students who have attended a Spanish school in Argentina have found that there are a variety of side benefits to spending time in this country. Any trip to South America is guaranteed to be a culturally enriching experience, not to mention a full social calendar. However, when you add learning the tango to the mix this makes the entire trip all the more memorable.

Spanish immersion programs have substantial advantages over learning the language in a university setting. One major benefit is that classes are limited to just 4 to 7 students. This is dramatically smaller than many university Spanish classes, which can sometimes have more than thirty students. Classes are 20 hours per week and typically run from one to four months and encompass skill levels ranging from beginner to advanced.

Look for a program that allows you to Add on tango courses when you learn Spanish in Buenos Aires. What would a typical dance schedule look like? Receive tango instruction during two or three weekly lessons. And beyond that you will want to leave time for 3 or 4 nights per week at the milongas, which are the famous tango clubs.

If you are worried about costs, Argentina will have a relatively light impact on your wallet. With a cost of living much lower than in the United States almost everything will be cheaper including food and rent. With that currency exchange leverage you should not be afraid to pay a bit more for quality, for example when you are seeking a place to stay two great neighborhoods to consider are Recoleta and Palermo. While living in these neighborhoods may be $20 or $30 more a week, it is well worth the extra cost to live in one of these beautiful and convenient locales. Getting around is cheap and easy, as inexpensive taxis are everywhere.

Buenos Aires is a vibrant and sprawling metropolis with so much to offer. In between your Spanish and tango lessons, there is a world of activities to explore. The MALBA, widely considered South America's best art museum, is a must see. Of course, as a world-class city, Buenos Aires is also full of great restaurants, European style cafes and theaters.

Nina Degiacomi, an attendee of Spanish school in Argentina from Switzerland stated, “I took a one month Spanish Course and to be honest, it was one of my best experiences I have ever had. All the teachers are absolutely great, you can learn a lot in just a few weeks. And the school organized great events everyday, like dancing lessons, city tours, weekend trips…I will never forget this time.” There is no doubt that it will be educational, fun and culturally rewarding to learn Spanish in Buenos Aires. The experience of studying and living abroad not only expands personal horizons, but also can lead to new career and life paths. Now just imagine adding, “I learned the tango,” to that already impressive list of accomplishments.
