I Love Touring Italy - Discovering Pompeii Hotels

Pompeii026Image by Royal Olive via Flickr By: Levi Reiss

Pompeii and the neighboring city of Herculaneum are truly unique open-air museums. On August 24, 79 A. D. Mount Vesuvius destroyed these two cities within a period of some twelve hours. Thousands of people were killed but the buildings were only slightly damaged. Pompeii is a major tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here you can see in extraordinary detail the way people lived at the height of the Roman Empire. You might wish to purchase a three-day ticket that allows you to visit five archeological sites: Herculaneum, Pompeii, Oplontis, Stabiae, and Boscoreale. Among the sites to see in Pompeii are the Foro (Forum) once the town's center, the Macellum, a covered meat and fish market, the Basilica, the court of law and economic center, the Anfiteatro (Amphitheater), the baths, and perhaps the brothels. Don't bring the kids to visit the Villa dei Misteri (Villa of the Mysteries). For your convenience we have listed neighborhood hotels in approximate order of cost, starting with the least expensive.

Trekking in the Amalfi Coast

Positano, Amalfi Coast, ItalyImage by Allerina & Glen MacLarty via Flickr

The coast line from Punta Campanella to Positano is also marked by glimpses of high natural value for geological and environmental characteristics, and from the shoreline to the sea offers an array of breathtaking views of Li Galli, Capri, Positano. From the sea the appearance changes due to the presence of bare and barren nature of steep slopes, like those of a coastline full of coves and bays accessible only by sea, the feeling for those who sail in these waters is of isolation and total contact with nature. From Positano to Amalfi Coast but is characterized by settlements in valleys sloping down towards the sea, interspersed with large green areas, creating a landscape that is prestigious result of the integration of human work and the work of nature not easily accessible.

The Amalfi Coast is dotted with towers and fortifications, from the tip of Massalubrense to the threshold of Salerno, with the remains of its castle towering claims the role of the provincial capital and center of a wider territorial context. The many tourist sites that have been made over the last decades, have substantially altered the value of this beautiful coastal area. Each of the countries that now dot the Amalfi coast has preserved intact over the centuries of its old charm thanks to the ever-present relationship between the territory and the immense beauty of artistic and cultural heritage, bearing witness to a glorious past. Its inhabitants express sensitivity and creativity in crafts ceramics, handmade paper processing, the chestnut baskets, wrought iron and fashion Positano.
The position of the peninsula, particularly happy, sunny and protected from the wind, created a privileged environment in terms of climate, but certainly it is no coincidence that urban settlements are all of high-medieval origin, which date back to a period in such as security and the ability of defense were key factors in the creation of a settlement. The most ancient of the population are in the Caves of the Amalfi Positano, the most important of which is called The Door, in it's lower strata of the filing document with the Upper Paleolithic lithic industry on mountain goat hunters, deer and wild boar the layers above refer, instead, a Mesolithic population of terrestrial and marine shellfish gatherers. In classical times the Amalfi Coast shows an intact forest cover with no built-up areas, the sources of those ages speak only of the three small rocks, now called Li Galli and ancient Sirenum Petrae, held at the home of Homer's sirens whose cult Sorrento was dedicated at a sanctuary. But these houses were like those of Minori, Positano, Li Galli and the small island, accessible only by sea and of members of the imperial court that at the time of Augustus and Tiberius, made frequent visits to nearby Capri.

Pompeii - Mt Vesuvius

Mount Vesuvius as seen from Pompeii. Hi-res sc...Image via Wikipedia

Pompeii and Mount Vesuvius or Vesuvio, the volcano near Naples, is an interesting place to explore. Mount Vesuvius, one of the world's most dangerous volcanoes, has an eruption cycle of about 20 years, but the last eruption was in 1944. Lets continue to find out more about Pompeii Mt Vesuvius.

Mount Vesuvius Active Volcano

When you finally reach the edge of the crater, you will be staggered at its size. Inside the crater itself, it is possible to see glimpses of steam rising from the side of the crater demonstrating that Mt Vesuvius is an active volcano.

Eruption of Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii

It is unknown how many people left Pompeii after the first earthquake, but a considerable number did indeed leave the devastation behind and move to other cities within the Roman Empire. By the 1st century, Pompeii was one of a number of towns located around the base of Mount Vesuvius. Love and sex were considered earthly practices of a man's life that were encouraged by the benevolence of Venus. Some aspects of the Pompeii culture were distinctly erotic, including phallic worship.

Pompeii Eruption of Vesuvius

The eruption was documented by contemporary historians and is generally accepted as having started on 24 August 79, relying on one version of the text of Pliny's letter. The overall experience of the Vesuvius eruption, must have been etched on Pliny's memory given the trauma of the occasion, and the loss of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, with whom he had a close relationship.

Mount Vesuvius What Happened?

The last major eruption was in March 1944 and it destroyed the villages of San Sebastiano al Vesuvio, Massa di Somma, Ottaviano, and part of San Giorgio a Cremano. The eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 1906 was particularly destructive, killing over 100 people and ejecting the most lava ever recorded from a Vesuvian eruption. Since 1944, the volcano has been silent.

Pliny The Younger Mt Vesuvius

Many contemporary sculptures are described and discussed by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia published in 77 AD. Campi Flegrei, furthermore known as the Phlegraean Fields (from Greek meaning burning fields), is a large 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) wide caldera situated to the west of the city of Naples. Pliny was here with his Uncle when the eruption of Mt Vesuvius happened. Pliny's uncle, the naturalist Pliny the Elder, was in charge of area warships, but he turned his fleet to rescuing residents and died.

Mt Vesuvius Lava

Mount Vesuvius was built up by a series of lava flows and a number of smaller explosive eruptions interspersed in-between. The lava is composed of adesite, viscous in nature. The whole of Mount Vesuvius comprises layers of lava, volcanic ash and pumice.

Pompeii Volcanoes Area

The pyroclastic blast from the eruption incinerated the inhabitants of Herculaneum. Almost 2,000 years later, You have the opportunity to explore the preserved ruins of this famed disaster.A busy commercial centre with a population of 10,000-20,000, the ancient Pompeii covered about 160 acres on the seaward end of the fertile Sarno Plain. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed and completely buried during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in 79 AD.

Pompeii Herculaneum

Both Pompeii and Herculaneum have since been excavated to reveal many intact buildings and wall paintings. A full day Pompeii and Herculaneum tour can be a historical discovery exploring the archaeological sites of the Bay of Naples. Silent for thousands of years, Pompeii and Herculaneum are now living museums of life in the Roman Empire.

Visiting Italy - Pompeii Vs Herculaneum

Mount Vesuvius as seen from Pompeii. Hi-res sc...Image via Wikipedia

All the world knows about the excavation's site of Pompeii, a Roman town, buried under the volcanic ash in 79 AD. Millions of tourists visit this site every year. It's one of the most visited touristic attractions of Italy. Not so many persons know about an other excavation's site, a Roman town Herculaneum, distant only 17 km from Pompeii, destroyed by the same eruption of the Vesuvius.

These sites are similar from one point of view. They are both excavations and museums under the open air. But there are differences that will maybe influence your choice when you plan what you would prefer to see. In this article I want to write about these similitude and differences.

Excavations of Pompeii cover great area. If you want to visit all parts of this site quietly, you have to plan at least half a day of walking. Think about your shoes first of all and about the clothes if the sun shines brightly. The temperatures are high in spring and in summer. Cover your head and take a bottle of water maybe. There are drinking fountains there but if you prefer mineral water it will be better to have it with you.

It would be great if you come there with a printed or bought before map or plan of the site and a list of the places you want to see. It's possible to find the map in the ticket office. But the possibilities they do not have the maps are very high so far as there are hundreds and thousands visitors every day. The list you prepared will help you, if your guide does not show you or your group something you are interested in. So you can ask what you want and visit the place when the group has free time.

Generally, Pompeii are ruins where is difficult to understand much without a guide or a preliminary preparation.

Excavations of Herculaneum are very "compact". They are situated inside the modern town of Ercolano (The modern town of Pompeii is developed near the excavations round the Sanctuary of Madonna of Rosary). The rules about your shoes, clothing and water are the same more or less. There are not drinking fountains, so, to have a bottle of mineral water can be useful. Visitors are here not so numerous, you can find maps and descriptions in all languages even if you come at 18:00, an hour before the closing time. For quiet visit you will need about an hour or two.

As opposed to Pompeii, the buildings are remarkably well preserved in Herculaneum. There are many frescoes and mosaics, villas preserve their statues, decorations and sometimes parts of furniture. There are incredible waves on the floors of many houses and bathes. You have not invent anything. Your eyes see and your mind understands what you have for. Read a little from the history before you go there or directly in the book you will receive with the ticket.

The other advantage of this site is, you can come here before or after the visit of the crater of Vesuvius.

What you will not find in Herculaneum are the plaster casts of the persons and animals that you can see in Pompeii in different houses.
